Latin America: toward low emissions and resilient to climate economic development
The V LEDS LAC Regional Workshop started on Monday in Panama to debate and share the best public policies and ways to incorporate a change in paradigm in economic development
With the objective of advancing in the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the V LEDS LAC Regional Workshop gathered more than 200 leaders from the Latin American public and private sectors in Panama, to debate and share the most efficient low in carbon and resilient to climate development measures.
In this scenario, CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, ratified its commitment to advice, support, and finance sustainability policies for mitigation and adaptation to climate change in the region.
Ligia Castro, CAF's Corporate Director for The Environment and Climate Change, explained, "CAF's commitment with the States, institutions and the private and academic sectors has the objective of making our region more resilient to climate change, and migrate toward economies that are low in carbon. Workshops such as the LEDS LAC help learn about the regional needs, experiences, and successful cases with respect to the environment, vital resources for the implementation of projects from a perspective of unity, and active participation of the sectors involved".
In this same line of collaboration, Castro commented, "Our cooperation, both technical and economic, promotes the payment of incentives based on performance, facilitates technical tools for the development of vulnerability indices and of the water and carbon footprint of the cities as a starting point, for the subsequent development and financing of projects to be implemented, while at the same time promoting a comprehensive and cross-cutting vision between the participating entities for the implementation of projects formulated for the mitigation of the effects of climate change".
The workshop, carried out with the support of the Ministry of the Environment, CAF, and other multilateral and non-governmental organizations, included the participation of Mirei Endara, Minister of the Environment of Panama, Susana Pinilla, CAF's Director Representative in Panama, Ana María Majano, Coordinator of the LEDS LAC Secretariat, Omar Ramírez, advisor to the Executive Power of the Dominican Republic for Environmental Affairs and President of the Executive Committee of LEDS LAC, and more than 200 international professionals.
