Six measures to improve energy efficiency in Chile
For Latin America to use energy efficiently, it must reduce the amount of fuels and electricity consumed, without affecting quality or access
It is estimated that Latin America could save up to USD 21,4 billion in energy consumption if it equated its energy intensity to that of the countries of the European Union. In addition, the Regional Energy Efficiency Program (PREE, for its acronym in Spanish) estimates that during the next two decades the region will have to invest USD 315 billion on diverse energy efficiency projects to supply energy to the population and guarantee the security of the supply.
In an effort to maximize the interventions that promote energy efficiency, CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, conducted the study Energy Efficiency in Chile: Identification of Opportunities, which identifies the sectors, measures, and strategies that may be applied in Chile.
The report determined six strategic measures to improve the country's energy efficiency:
- Implementation of the ISO 500001 norm, which implies implementing systems for the management of energy by the industries which are connected to the voluntary scheme to reduce energy consumption.
- Installation of air or water heat pumps in buildings to cover the climate control needs.
- Implementation of electronic variation systems, used to control the rotating speed of machinery, specially engines.
- Establishment of high efficiency static UPS, which provide electric energy during electricity outages to the devices that are connected.
- Thermal isolation in buildings.
- Isolation of industrial pipes to preserve temperatures.
