Call for research proposals on Health and Social Inclusion in Latin America
CAF -Development Bank of Latin America- calls to present research proposals that contribute to the study of health as a promoter of social inclusion in Latin America.
Latin America has made great progress towards improving the health of its population, as evidenced in the sharp drop in child mortality and in the sustained increase in life expectancy observed in the last decades. However, many health related problems are still to be solved, such as child malnutrition (stunting affects ten percent of children below five years old) or some infectious diseases, like dengue and malaria, which are endemic in many countries.
In the recent past, many Latin American countries introduced reforms aimed at strengthening health systems and universalizing access to health care. Still, a considerable number of individuals remain without effective access, even for the most basic medical services. At the same time, the demographic changes are increasing the incidence of chronic diseases, challenging the sustainability of health systems in the region.
CAF is inviting researchers to submit research proposals addressing a wide range of health-related issues, with an emphasis on the connection between health and social inclusion. Both empirical and theoretical contributions are welcome. A list of proposed topics is: public health, health prevention, health related behaviors, mental health, insurers'/providers' competition and choice, mixed private-public health care systems, among other subjects.
Proposals should be sent to investigacion@caf.com
A maximum of three research proposals will be funded, and each one will receive USD 15.000. The authors of the two best proposals are expected to present their results in the workshop"FrontiersofHealth Economics Research in Latin America",that will be held in Boston.
