Experts meet in Mexico to define strategies to mitigate air pollution
The workshop "Strategies to mitigate air pollution" will take place in the Historic Center of Mexico City on January 19th and 20th. The objective is to provide information regarding the ways in which the current mitigation policies and programs for air pollution may be improved and/or modified on the basis of international experience.
The workshop will be based on presentations and debates directed by experts on mitigation strategies for air pollution from city administrations and research institutions of OECD member countries and the International Transportation Forum (ITF). Moderators will guide the discussions in the working sessions.
The main questions and challenges in each subject will be briefly summarized to open each working session. Several international experts will describe the application of policies and programs that have been successful in moderating pollution. This will include policies that have yet to be implemented in Mexico, similar to those developed up to now in Mexico which have been modified or replaced to improve results and policies which have not been implemented in Mexico, but could be considered.
A moderate discussion between participating members of local authorities and institutions and international experts, will focus on achieving conclusions on how the experience presented here could be incorporated to the city's current strategy, and the ways in which national regulations could support this process.
Jorge Kogan, advisor to the Vice-Presidency of Infrastructure at CAF, Development Bank of Latin America, will moderate three working sessions: the first, focused on the improvement of the inspection and maintenance of pollution monitoring systems; the second on merchandise transportation management policies and mechanisms for their effective application; and third, on discussing comprenhesive strategies that enable the management of mobility and reduce air pollution.
