Technological Innovation Indicators 2017
For the fourth consecutive year, CAF presented its Technological Innovation Indicators in Countries and Regions, the result of monitoring and raising the base line of technological innovation under the Regional Initiative of Technological Patents for Development.
Regional indicators compare the status of technological innovation in Latin America with regions in Asia, Europe and North America, while country indicators describe the status of technological innovation in CAF countries, using South Korea as a reference, as its data in 1980 were similar to those of Latin American countries.
The indicators include applications via PCT, patent applications and grants in relevant international offices, high-tech exports and royalties received for the use of intellectual property.
The Regional Initiative for Technological Patents for Development, which CAF promotes, established technological innovation as one of the engines for economic growth and sustainable development in the regions, and singled out patents as the means to protect this innovation from commercialization by third parties. The initiative set as its long-term objective an increase in high-tech exports from the region and an increase in royalties for the use of intellectual property.
Thanks to these indicators, CAF can assess the impact of the Regional Patent Initiative on countries and at regional level, suggesting improvements in the quality and content of future projects in the realm of technological innovation.
