CAF promotes child road safety in Latin America
CAF has spent more than USD 1.5 million over the last decade to improve road safety in the region by sharing experiences, promoting transparent public policies, and introducing road safety schemes for vulnerable populations, among other initiatives. As part of National Road Safety Week in Argentina, CAF attended the International Child Road Safety Forum (FISEVI), organized by the Gonzalo Rodriguez Foundation and the Ministry of Transport.
CAF-development bank of Latin America- attended the third International Road Safety Forum (FISEVI) held in Buenos Aires on June 12 and 13 to share knowledge, experiences and good practices in road safety management throughout the continent.
Traffic accidents are one of the leading causes of death around the world and particularly in Latin America, ranking as the main cause of death of children between the ages of 5 and 14 in the region. According to the World Health Organization’s latest report on international road safety, 90% of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents occur in low and middle-income countries.
During the full session on "Public Road Safety Policy", Nicolas Estupiñán, CAF’s Urban Transportation Coordinator, summarized the research carried out on the use of motorcycles on the continent, and said: “It is an issue of social inequality in developing countries. Somehow, it catalyzes certain aspects of our economies: the state’s inability to meet connectivity and accessibility needs, and the fact that the motorcycle provides social mobility. Until we come up with other options, more and people will use motorcycles.”
Estupiñán added: “We need global and binding agreements in the field of road safety, similarly to other areas. We need political will and commitment of all players involved to ensure a fairer future for all.” The coordinator was accompanied by other transport specialists of the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, the Spanish Road Association, the National Road Safety Commission of Chile, and the National Road Safety Agencies of Argentina and Colombia.
CAF promotes road safety as a fundamental part of road and urban transport projects, helping countries in the region reduce deaths and injuries, and supporting victims of traffic accidents by raising awareness, training and making improvements to infrastructure and regulations. The International Child Road Safety Forum, organized by the Gonzalo Rodriguez Foundation and the National Road Safety Agency of the Argentinean Ministry of Transport, brought together specialists from various social organizations and government officials to discuss issues focused on safe systems. A new concept of road safety was presented during the forum, based on shared responsibility between road users and road designers and builders to address traffic accidents.
