First step towards building the University of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas
The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Technology and Innovation (Senescyt) and CAF-development bank of Latin America, agreed on the preparation of curricula to establish the University of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, determining the feasibility and sustainability of the new university, the conceptual strategic model for its management, and the integral plan and first-phase construction designs
With an investment of approximately US$ 35 million, this new public university will be built at kilometer 23 of the Quevedo-Santo Domingo road, benefiting high school graduates of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas and neighboring communities.
The first phase of the project includes infrastructure, purchase of equipment, development of academic courses and training of managing staff and promoters. According to the minister of Senescyt, construction of the new university will begin in early 2019 and will be completed by 2020.
The agreement was signed by Augusto Barrera, minister of Senescyt and Bernardo Requena, director-representative of CAF in Ecuador, in the presence of the President of Ecuador, Lenín Moreno, who endorsed the goal of expanding and diversifying the academic offer in this important area of the nation, which has tremendous productive potential.
Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas is one of the provinces with the lowest academic offers in terms of higher education, despite its great growth outlook in the agro-industrial sector. Apart from its location in the Guayas River basin, and the privileged features of its soils for agricultural production, this initiative is a strategic step towards improving education for young Ecuadorians
CAF will continue supporting the efforts to diversify the academic offer, aimed at the needs of the priority sectors for economic and social development of the nation.
