Piura urban mobility diagnosis presented
A study was conducted to determine the status of this important mid-sized city in Northern Peru, based on population and urban growth.
An urban mobility diagnosis was presented to the authorities of the Piura municipality, in northern Peru, in an effort to determine the area’s current status, considering recent population growth and urban development across this important mid-sized city, which boasts great potential for socio-economic development.
Supported by CAF-development bank of Latin America, this diagnosis is one of the first key deliverables of the Master Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility in Piura, developed by IDOM – an international consulting firm that provides professional engineering and architecture services.
It is important to note that the Plan was sponsored by the LAIF Fund (Latin American Investment Facility) of the European Commission, managed by CAF and the German KfW development bank, and was awarded to IDOM after an international bidding process carried out in 2017.
More than 70 participants from local public and private entities attended the presentation event, including the Mayor of Piura, Oscar Miranda, and a delegation of CAF officials.
The study outlines the growth and mobility patterns of the Piuran population. The Plan will be delivered in four months, and will become an essential tool to optimize urban transport infrastructure, introduce proposals regarding priority investment projects to minimize the transaction cost of population mobilization, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and improve the quality of life, ultimately boosting the city’s competitiveness and economic development.
The CAF delegation also presented other relevant reports to local authorities, such as trends in the use of motorcycles in Latin America and road safety measures recommended for the city, as well as public cycling systems in Latin American cities.
