Regional workshop presents the most innovative experiences in teacher training in Latin America
As part of the Regional Program for the Development of the Teaching Profession in Latin America and the Caribbean (PREDALC), teachers and education authorities from the region presented 33 selected experiences on their contributions to improve the quality of teaching.
Teachers and representatives from ministries of education and training institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean met in Bogotá on October 25 and 26 to present the results of 33 initiatives selected by PREDALC, exchange these innovative experiences in teacher training and create synergies between different networks, which seek to improve teaching quality and promote and disseminate best practices, lessons learned and challenges in this field.
At the event organized by CAF-development bank of Latin America-, the World Bank, the Organization of Ibero-American States for Education, Science and Culture (OEI) and the Ministry of Education of Colombia, 33 selected experiences were presented, which incorporate novel components in initial and continuous teacher training. The call for proposals was met by more than 100 projects from 17 countries in the region, which were evaluated by a committee of international experts who analyzed the innovative elements of projects to attract the best students, propose new forms of curriculum organization, and improve the social value of the profession, among other elements.
The Regional Workshop on Innovation in Teacher Training was officially opened by Hernando Bayona Rodriguez, advisor delegate of the Ministry of Education of Colombia; Carlos Zuluaga, deputy director of OEI; Bibiam Díaz, CAF education specialist, and Omar Arias, Practice Manager for Global Knowledge and Innovation at the World Bank. At the opening of the second session of the workshop, the Minister of Education of Colombia, María Victoria Angulo, shared with the participants the challenges facing the nation today to improve the quality of education and training of teachers.
“For CAF, education is key for growth, social welfare and individual progress, so Latin America should continue its efforts not only in increasing access to education, but also in raising quality with an emphasis on equity. Improving the quality of initial and continuous teacher training is vital to attain these goals,” stressed Bibiam Díaz.
In addition, Omar Arias said that, “According to the last World Development Report on Education, we have a global learning crisis and this is, in essence, a teaching crisis. This leads us to reflect on what is the school of the future, and to ask ourselves how we should build the teaching profession of the future.”
Improving quality of education in the region requires profound changes in educational policy and initial and continuous teacher training systems. The PREDALC Program, promoted by CAF, the World Bank and OEI, seeks to publicize the experiences with the most innovative elements, and help to create a new vision of the teaching profession, to make it a more attractive option for professional development for future generations. The meeting was also a forum to recognize the work of teams leading these processes of social change and improvement in the quality of education.
