428 Peruvian leaders trained in democratic values
The graduates come from decentralized locations in different parts of the country.
A total of 428 leaders of twenty-three decentralized locations in the country graduated from the 12th Leadership for Transformation Program, a CAF -development bank of Latin America- initiative, promoted in Peru in partnership with the Governance and Public Management Institute of the San Martín de Porres University (USMP), aiming to strengthen citizen leadership, as well as civic and democratic values.
Manuel Malaret, CAF representative in Peru, pointed out that although the main function of the multilateral institution is to finance infrastructure projects for sustainable development in Latin America, for more than one decade it has been running programs to identify leaders, provide them with tools, and empower them, with a view to strengthening capacities and competences of the human capital in the region.
"They begin to exercise their leadership at a special moment for Peru, as there has been progress with democratic institutionality and macroeconomic policies, which has resulted in welfare and lower poverty levels. However, there is still a long way to go. Therefore, I urge you to exercise that leadership so that the country can grow both at an economic and social level with equity", he stressed.
In turn, the academic coordinator of the Governance and Public Management Institute of the USMP, Ivan Hidalgo Romero, urged graduates to use the newly tools and training to work towards a joint solution for the problems in their communities and reach the development of the region.
"The goal of your work should be to turn Peru into a more competitive country, put an end to inequality, and use new technology tools to adapt to an increasingly changing world," he added.
In this year edition, the program was carried out in 25 locations: Amazonas, Ancash, Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cajamarca, Callao, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Ica, and Junín, as well as La Libertad, Lambayeque, Lima, Lima Norte, Lima Sur, Loreto, Pasco, Piura, Puno, San Martín, Tacna, Tumbes, and Ucayali.
Since 2006, over 7,000 leaders have graduated from the "Leadership for Transformation Program" in 25 regions, 160 provinces, and 1,600 districts countrywide. It should be noted that more than half of the graduates are women and 50% are young adults.
