Feasibility study for North-South Urban Transport Corridor in Trujillo
The last deliverable of the Pre-investment Feasibility Study for the North-South urban transport corridor of the city of Trujillo, in northern Peru, was presented to the authorities of the Provincial Municipality of Trujillo and representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Ministry of Economy and Finance, the European Union in Peru and other cooperating entities.
The study was prepared by the INGEROP-DELOITTE consortium, and is part of a group of studies funded by the European Commission’s LAIF (Latin American Investment Facility), administered by Germany’s KfW development bank and implemented by CAF.
This work has been developed within approximately ten months and has involved local public and private authorities and agencies, as well as professional associations and civil society. In the first phase, a sizeable amount of field data was collected in order to devise a complete transport model for the entire city, which will allow the development of the city’s subsequent mobility projects, apart from the main North-South corridor.
The North-South corridor will be a new sustainable mobility service in the city, built on the main axis of the Trujillo urban transport system, type BRT (bus rapid transit), which will mobilize 90,000 passengers every day by 2021, along 23.4 kilometers each direction. The project will require an investment of about $90 million, and has been devised with a reserved infrastructure in the 11.4-kilometer central stretch of the route, and extension services to the north, towards the area of El Milagro (4.7 kilometers) and to the south, towards the area of Moche (7.3 kilometers), to serve the city’s recent population growth. In the central section of the route, improvement interventions and curb-to-curb road management will be carried out, to enhance infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and public and private transport, with a focus on BRT transit through the urban center. Thus, the project is also an important tool to recover this important historical center in Peru.
The presentation took place at the facilities of the Provincial Municipality of Trujillo. The Mayor gave the welcome remarks and Manuel Malaret, representative of the CAF Office in Peru and Paloma Ruiz, specialist of the Vice Presidency of Infrastructure at CAF, made some final comments at the closing of the event. In addition, the representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Ministry of Economy and Finance highlighted the ongoing work on this project and noted the commitment of the MTC and MEF to supporting the implementation of this important project, through financial support from CAF and KfW.
This study is the result of CAF’s continued support to the city of Trujillo, since 2007, in addition to important contributions from the European Union, through the LAIF fund, and Germany’s technical and financial cooperation.
