Panama’s Maritime Authority presented the Maritime Port Development Plan 2040, a document prepared with technical cooperation from CAF
The Strategic Maritime Port Development Plan of the Republic of Panama, Vision 2040 is a document that outlines the roadmap for Panama’s maritime and port sector. The initiative is led by Panama’s Maritime Authority (AMP) aimed at consolidating the country as a world-class logistics hub, a leader in freight traffic and the provision of value-added logistics services.
The estimated investment for the implementation of the strategy by 2040 is USD 270 billion, distributed in 26 port hubs throughout the country and including areas such as Vacamonte, Aguadulce, Puerto Armuelles, Pedregal, Puerto Obaldía, among others.
Vision 2040 Strategic Axes
In addition, the 20-year plan outlines AMP’s action along four strategic axes: (1) management of the maritime port sector; (2) efficient management of its assets; (3) facilitation of Panama’s productive, industrial and logistical development, and (4) facilitating social well-being and environmental protection.
The four axes mentioned above break down into 24 objectives and 178 actions, which were defined after nine months of consultations with the main stakeholders in Panama’s maritime and port sector. Public and private agencies worked together to identify weak areas, and meeting market and user needs and demands.
Guimara Tuñón, Director General of Ports and Auxiliary Maritime Industries at AMP, noted that this document outlines the port management model that consolidates Panama in the coming years as a global hub, and integrates logistics development with the nation’s comprehensive growth.
During the launch ceremony Fausto Arroyo, chief executive of the Directorate of Analysis and Technical Infrastructure Assessment at CAF commented: “We congratulate Panama’s Maritime Authority on the development and dissemination of this Strategic Plan. CAF’s action in the maritime sector of the region identifies Panama as a key hub with a decisive role in the productivity and efficiency of the regional maritime transport system. Therefore, we confirm our commitment to Panama and the AMP in this exercise, which boosts national productivity, with a vision that strengthens maritime, port and logistic competitiveness at local and regional level.
