I received my first degree in Economics in 1990 from the Universidad de Buenos Aires, Argentina and a D.Phil in Economics from Oxford University in 1996. After a short stay in Argentina I joined Harvard Business School in July 1997, where I have taught Business History and courses on the business environment in the first year required curriculum, as well as an elective course on Institutions and Macroeconomics in the second year.

I work on political economy, with a focus on institutional development. One strand of work studies measures of happiness and how they can inform government policies on issues that range from the incidence of inequality to the inflation-unemployment tradeoff. Another part of my research has concerned itself with the causes of illegal behavior, with applications to corruption and crime. Two recent examples include a paper on media bias and government transfers, and another trying to figure out if offenders released from electronic monitoring have lower recidvism rates than those released from prison.  Finally, an increasingly important area of research for me has focused on the role of beliefs in economic organization, including reversals of pro-market reform and, more generally, why doesn't capitalism flow to poor countries. My work has been published mainly in academic journals.

Ph.D. en Economía en la  Universidad de California (EE.UU.), Masters en Economía por la misma universidad. Master en Economía del Instituto Torcuato Di Tella (Argentina). Profesor de Economía de la Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Anteriormente, investigador y profesor visitante en la Universidad de New México, la Universidad de Texas (A&M) y la Universidad de Bonn, Alemania.

Intereses de investigación: comercio exterior e integración, desarrollo económico y federalismo fiscal.

Ha sido miembro de LARR (Latin América Research Review). Ha trabajado como consultor del Banco Mundial, Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, la Comisión Económica para Latinoamérica y el Caribe (ECLAC), y CAF, banco de desarrollo de América Latina, y ha sido miembro del directorio de la Comisión Nacional de Comercio Exterior de Argentina. Ha publicado artículos en revistas internacionales como Economics and Politics, Journal of Internacional Economics y el Journal of Development Economics. También ha publicado artículos en diversos libros y  revistas regionales. Intereses de investigación: comercio exterior e integración, desarrollo económico y federalismo fiscal.

Leandro Piquet Carneiro possui graduação em Ciências Econômicas pela Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (1988), especialização em métodos quantitativos de pesquisa pelo ICPSR, Universidades de Michigan (1992 e 1993) mestrado em Ciência Política pelo IUPERJ (1990) e doutorado em Ciência Política pela mesma instituição (1998). Pesquisador visitante do Taubman Center da JFK School of Government (2007) é professor doutor do Departamento de Ciência Política da Universidade de São Paulo e pesquisador do Núcleo de Pesquisas em Políticas Públicas (NUPPs) da mesma universidade.

Membro de conselho editorial da Revista Opinião Pública do CESOP, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, tem experiência na área de ciência política, com ênfase em estudos quantitativos sobre o crime e a violência. Foi pesquisador do ISER no Rio de Janeiro entre 1991-1998, onde foi um dos fundadores do Núcleo de Pesquisa daquela instituição e posteriormente coordenador do Programa de Pesquisa em Segurança Pública e Direitos Civis. Nesse período, participou como pesquisador do projeto comparativo Atitudes e Normas Frente à Violência na América Latina , da Organização Pan-Americana de Saúde (1996-97), do estudo Magnitude e Custos Econômicos da Violência , desenvolvido pelo Banco Interamericano de Desenvolvimento (1997-98) e ainda do estudo comparativo Determinantes da Violência na América Latina. Iniciou suas atividades docentes na Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, UERJ, em 1995 e em 1997 iniciou seu programa de pós-doutorado no Departamento de Ciência Política da Universidade de São Paulo e em 2000 tornou-se professor da mesma instituição. É pesquisador principal do projeto temático FAPESP Democracia e Governo Local desde 1997.

Daniel S. Nagin is Teresa and H. John Heinz III University Professor of Public Policy and Statistics and since January, 2006 has served as the School's Associate Dean of Faculty. He received his Ph.D. in 1976 from what is now the Heinz School. He is the co-editor of Criminology and Public Policy, chaired the National Research Council's Committee on Deterrence and the Death Penalty, and served as Deputy Secretary for Fiscal Policy and Analysis in the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue from 1981 to 1986.

Nagin is an elected Fellow of the American Society of Criminology, American Society for the Advancement of Science, and American Academy of Political and Social Science. He is the 2006 recipient of the American Society of Criminology's Edwin H Sutherland Award and in 2014 was awarded the Stockholm Prize in Criminology.

His research focuses on the evolution of criminal and antisocial behaviors over the life course, the deterrent effect of criminal and non-criminal penalties on illegal behaviors, and the development of statistical methods for analyzing longitudinal data. His work has appeared in such diverse outlets as the American Economic Review, American Sociological Review, Journal of the American Statistical Association, American Journal of Sociology, Archives of General Psychiatry, Criminology, Child Development, Demography, Psychological Methodology, Law & Society Review, Crime and Justice Annual Review, Operations Research, and Stanford Law Review. He is also the author of Group-based Modeling of Development (Harvard University Press, 2005).
